Carbon adsorption technology consists of moving contaminated air through a packed bed of activated carbon that adsorbs contaminants and discharges clean air. Effective and simple in principal of operation, carbon scrubbers are the mainstay of commercial and municipal odor/VOC mitigation. Afras Air designs and manufactures carbon adsorption systems to custom fit the needs and specific requirements of each application.
The most significant operational cost of carbon adsorption systems is the replacement of activated carbon. At Afras Air numerous design optimizations and two patented technologies have resulted in up to a 300% extension of activated carbon lifespan compared with traditional systems. The net result is cost savings to our customers, and a reduction in the operation, maintenance and environmental costs associated with the less frequent carbon change-outs. Afras Air continues to innovate and find new ways to optimize and deliver long term cost savings to our customers.

The air discharge line weather cap on the Afras Air carbon scrubber system is designed to protect the outlet from environmental elements. It prevents rain, snow, and debris from entering the air discharge duct, which can potentially impact the performance and integrity of the system. The weather cap ensures that only clean, treated air exits the scrubber while safeguarding the exhaust components from weather-related damage. Its design helps maintain the reliability and efficiency of the Afras Air carbon scrubber by preventing the buildup of obstructions and ensuring consistent airflow.
The Afras Air carbon scrubber units are designed with operators' safety in mind and are equipped with safety railings. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) compliant railing on the Afras Air carbon scrubber system is designed to meet and/or exceed safety requirements and is fully compliant with OSHA regulations. The railing provides a protective barrier around elevated platforms, access areas, and other potentially hazardous sections of the scrubber. Its design meets OSHA standards for height, strength, and durability, helping to prevent falls and accidents. By incorporating this safety feature, the system promotes a safer working environment and helps to minimize the risk of injury during maintenance and operation.
The uniquely designed and patented suspended media scrubber vessel in the Afras Air carbon scrubber system is designed to eliminate common contact between the carbon media and vessel’s walls, bottom and top, eliminating transfer of water/humidity to the carbon bed, resulting in significant cost saving due to longer carbon life. The patented deflector inside of the vessel assists with converting the saturated air to liquid which results in minimizing moisture from entering the media compartment. As the contaminated air passes through the vessel, the pollutants, VOC and Hydrogen Sulfide are absorbed by the media both physically and chemically. The Afras Air suspended media odor scrubber vessel is designed to maximize contact between the foul air and the media, ensuring efficient pollutant removal and maintaining optimal system performance.
The PLC panel in the Afras Air carbon scrubber system is critical in automating and controlling the operation of the scrubber. It houses the PLC, which is a digital computer used to manage and coordinate the various components and functions of the scrubber processes. The PLC panel allows for local or remote control of system functions, some of which include adjusting flow rates, monitoring pressure levels, vibration, valves, actuators, unit status, managing alarms and shutdowns. By providing a centralized interface for programming and operational control, the PLC panel enhances the efficiency and reliability of the Afras Air carbon scrubber system, allowing for precise and automated management of the scrubbing process.
The Afras Air power panel in the carbon scrubber system is responsible for managing and distributing electrical power to the various components. It houses circuit breakers, fuses, and control switches that regulate power flow and ensure safe operation. The power panel allows for the monitoring and control of electrical functions, such as turning the scrubber on or off, adjusting settings, and responding to electrical faults. By providing a centralized location for electrical management, the power panel facilitates the reliable and efficient operation of the carbon scrubber, helping to maintain consistent performance and safety.
The uniquely designed fan sound enclosure reduces noise generated by the fan during operation. It encases the fan with sound-absorbing materials and engineering features that minimizes acoustic emissions. Significant noise reduction helps create a quieter work environment that addresses noise pollution, which is particularly important in industrial settings or locations near residential areas. By containing and dampening the fan noise, the sound enclosure not only enhances workplace comfort but also ensures compliance with noise regulations and contributes to a more pleasant operating environment. The enclosure is modular, and the panels can be removed for easier accessibilities for fan services and repairs. Additionally, the enclosure is equipped with a locking system and emergency opening latch from inside.
The degreaser and demister components of the Afras Air carbon scrubber system are an integral part of the system, allowing for the effectiveness and longevity of the scrubber unit. The degreaser removes grease and oily substances from the inlet air stream before it enters the scrubber, preventing these contaminants interference with the scrubbing process. The demister, on the other hand, captures and removes mist and particulates from the inlet gas, ensuring that the air entering the scrubber is free of these obstructive elements. Together, these two components help maintain optimal performance and efficiency of the carbon scrubber by ensuring that the inlet air stream is clean and properly prepared for Hydrogen Sulfide and VOC capture and removal.
The isolation dampers in the Afras Air carbon scrubber system serve a critical role by connecting the foul air inlet duct to the fans and the rest of the system while allowing for airflow control. Isolation dampers can isolate sections of the scrubber for maintenance or emergency shutdowns without disrupting the odor control removal system. For the systems with two operating fans for redundancy, isolation dampers allow for smooth transition between the two fans without interrupting the operation. The isolation dampers ensure that airflow is precisely regulated, enhancing both the safety and performance of the Afras Air carbon scrubber. By maintaining the integrity of the system during operations and providing flexibility for maintenance, isolation dampers contribute to the overall reliability and longevity of the Afras Air units.
The foul air ducts are designed to direct foul air into the suspended media carbon scrubber for treatment. These ducts are engineered to ensure a smooth and efficient flow of foul air, maximizing contact with the carbon media. This efficient channeling is crucial for the effective removal of H2S (Hydrogen Sulfide), VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) and other pollutants from the air. The ducts are constructed to withstand industrial conditions, ensuring durability and consistent performance. By facilitating the proper movement of air through the system, the foul air ducts play a vital role in the overall efficiency and effectiveness of the Afras Air carbon scrubbing process.
The differential pressure monitor and flow meter transducer in the Afras Air system is a critical component of the carbon scrubber process. These devices measure the pressure difference across the scrubber for monitoring the air flow and pressure performance of the system. The real-time data helps in identifying blockages, filter clogging, or other issues that could impact the efficiency of the scrubber. By maintaining the proper pressure levels, the differential pressure monitor and air flow meter transducers ensure that the Afras Air scrubber operates effectively, and efficiently capture all pollutants at high levels. Monitoring capability not only helps in maintaining the system's performance but also prolongs its operational lifespan by informing the operators of timely maintenance and adjustments.
Biotrickling filtration (BTF) is widely used for the efficient control of noxious H2S produced in industrial and municipal wastewater treatment processes. BTF systems operate by moving odor laden air (typically H2S) through a bacterial biofilm immobilized on any one of several varieties of media. Sulfer oxidizing bacteria in the biofilm oxidize H2S to sulfate which is subsequently washed from the system. Afras Air designs, optimizes and manufactures BTF systems to meet the unique demands of industrial and municipal treatment processes.
The choice of filtration media is critical to the operation, efficiency and economy of BTF systems. Afras Air’s BTF media has been designed to maximize the surface area for biofilm immobilization without increasing the pressure drop associated with other high surface area media choices. Our BTF media is ultra durable, long lasting, lightweight and easy to install. Contact us for more information.
