MATALA® MEDIA
Matala® provides a high-efficiency, all-in-one solution for both mechanical and biological filtration. Our media are constructed from thermo-bonded curly fibers (TPPC/TPEC) formed into layered sheets of varying thickness.
The specific material formula and fiber thickness are precisely controlled to determine key performance characteristics, including: Porous Structure, Specific Surface Area, Density and Stiffness
This engineered approach ensures optimal filtration performance and durability for demanding applications.

The random, curly fiber matrix creates a dynamic three-dimensional flow path within the media. Here is how that translates to performance:
Micro-Turbulence: Gentle, turbulent flow ensures longer contact time between water, waste, and the media.
Optimal Biofilm Environment: The interstitial spaces (pores) are ideal for the development and retention of a robust biofilm, essential for effective biological filtration.
The specific construction of the media provides secondary benefits that boost overall system efficiency.
Maximized Surface Area: The structure tremendously increases the effective surface area for both particle capture and biofilm colonization.
Extended Aeration: The fibrous network retains air bubbles longer, enhancing oxygen transfer for aerobic biological processes.
Matala® media is engineered for exceptional solids loading, utilizing a graded density structure that captures and retains sludge throughout the entire depth of the media block.
Increased Sludge Capacity: The web-like structure holds flocculated particles throughout its depth, not just on the surface, significantly increasing sludge holding capacity (up to 10x its own weight).
Anticipates Clogging: This depth-loading mechanism prevents premature surface blinding (where only the top layer gets blocked), which significantly extends filter run times and reduces maintenance.
0.1m³ of material captured 24.3 kg of sludge.
This combination of high mechanical solids-holding and efficient biological activity allows for the design of smaller, fewer, or more efficient filter tanks without compromising effluent quality.
Matala® filter media are available in four distinct classes, each engineered with a specific density and surface area to optimize performance for different applications. The progression from Low to Super High Density allows for precise system design, balancing mechanical filtration, biological surface area, and pressure drop.
Advanced Odor Control, Powered by Matala® Media
Effectively manage noxious odors, particularly Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S), with an Afras BTF (Biotrickling Filtration) system – robust solutions engineered for the demanding environments of industrial and municipal foul air treatment. The choice of media is the most critical factor in a BTF system’s success. Afras® Air selects Matala® media because it is specifically engineered to overcome the limitations of conventional biofilter media. Matala® media provides a decisive performance advantage in the Afras® BTF system process of creating ideal conditions for natural bacteria to eliminate odorous compounds.
By partnering the advanced engineering of Afras® BTF systems with the superior performance of Matala® media, we deliver a solution that is not only highly effective but also more compact and economical to operate than traditional alternatives.
